================================ README ================================ This disc contains the MicroSoft Windows Archive from CICA (The Center for Innovative Computing Applications) at Indiana University. ========================================================================== You can use this disc several ways. You can run some programs directly from the CDROM. You can also copy files to your hard disk and run them there. A few programs need to write into the directory where they live and therefore can't run from the read-only CDROM drive. To run a program directly from the disc: Open File Manager window in main group. Select your CDROM drive letter. Select the appropriate directory for the program you want to execute. The unzipped programs are in \win3. See the entire list below. Select and run the program you want. You can find which files you want to use with the VIEW program in the root directory of the disc. This program lets you page through the index files and then copy the program you want to your hard disk. You can run the VIEW program in a DOS window or with the File Manager. If you use File Manager, simply type e:VIEW at the run option bar. (Substitute your CDROM's drive letter for the example drive letter e:.) You can then either run the program using the File Manager or Program Manager. Just select the disk, directory and program where you had VIEW copy the program and click on Run. To install the program so it displays an icon in your applications group you need to run the windows Setup program found in the Main group. First select Windows Setup in the Main Group. Then select Options in the menu bar. Select Set Up Applications. Select Ask You to Specify An Application. Type the path and name of the program you'd like to install. Windows setup will copy the program's icon into the Application Group and set up the program to run from the icon. From then on, as long as the CDROM disc is in the drive, you can run the program by clicking on its icon. For example, to make an permanant icon for boxworld after copying it with VIEW you would type: c:\cica\win3\games\boxworld\boxworld.exe into the "Specify An Application" box. ========================================================================== Although you may own this disk, you do not own the programs recorded on it. Many of the programs on this disc are shareware, and they may require separate payment to the author of the program for continued use. You are free to try shareware programs for a limited amount of time. If you are satisfied, and want to continue to use the program, you are expected to register the program by sending a specified amount of money directly to the author of the program. In many cases the author will send you the most up to date version of the program and a printed manual. Please check individual files for conditions. ========================================================================== Here is a list of some important files and directories: readme.txt (this file) index.txt A list of all the files in the archive pkunzip.exe Program for unzipping files named *.zip bbs\ Index files and programs for bbs use win3\demo Various Windows Demo Programs win3\desktop Desktop Image, Util, BMP Files win3\drivers/printer Software Drivers/Printers win3\drivers/video Software Drivers/Video win3\fonts Windows Soft Fonts win3\fonts/atm Adobe Type Manager (ATM) Fonts win3\fonts/truetype TrueType Fonts win3\games Windows Games and Diversions win3\icons Windows Icons, Icon Editors, etc. win3\misc Miscellaneous Files (tips, etc.) win3\nt Windows NT Files win3\programr Windows Programming win3\programr/bcpp Borland C++ Windows Programs win3\programr/listings Program Listings from Publications win3\programr/tp Windows Turbo Pascal Programming win3\programr/vbasic Windows Visual Basic Programming win3\sdl Windows Supplemental Devlpmnt Lib win3\sounds Windows Sounds and Util Files win3\toolbook Asymetrix ToolBook Applications win3\util General Windows Utilities win3\winword Word for Windows Utilities, Files win3\wpwin WordPerfect for Windows Utils win3\wrk Windows Resource Kit Files win_nt\ Windows NT tools from Microsoft simtel\ All windows 3 files from Simtel Archives unzipped\ Uncompressed files cis_libs\mswin32\*\ MS Compuserve Win32 libraries cis_libs\winnt\*\ MS Compuserve Windows/NT libraries winntprg\*\ Windows NT programming utiltiies. win_nt\os2towin\ MS OS/2 to Windows NT porting tools win_nt\ttinfo\ MS Windows NT True-Type specifications win_nt\windev\ MS Windows NT Developer's files win_nt\winsnapi\ MS Windows NT SNA APIs win_nt\winsock\ MS Windows NT Sockets API spec. ========================================================================== If you have access to the internet, you can find this archive at ftp.cica.indiana.edu (129.79.20.84) in the directory pub/pc/win3/.
